How We Met

Lovebirds..

I wish we had some romantic story of fate, or divine intervention about how we first met.. Like we bumped into each other at the park, or we got tangled up in our pet's leashes at the vet.. Our story is much less mystifying.

We met at Wendy's in the summer of 1998. That's right - the hamburger joint. I'd been working there a few months before she joined our crew.. You could say I'm a hamburger-flipping veteran, but I prefer to erase that terrible place from my memory. Anyway... I remember being on the front register, and the manager walking around the corner with this blond-haired, blue-eyed chick in tow.. Her hair was in a single braid down her back, and she had a nervous yet warm smile glued to her lips.. I introduced myself, probably made some strange crack to break the ice, and the rest is history.

But I guess you want to hear more about that history...

We were flirtatious right off the bat, but nothing really happened between us for a while, since I was involved with somebody else, and she only worked on the weekends. But once I got myself out of that relationship, and she started working more, the flirting was through the roof.

Even though I knew I liked her from day one, and I could tell she liked me, I couldn't get her to admit it.. I found out she'd been in a 'bi' relationship before, but it hadn't turned out too well, and she wasn't looking to experience it again. So, I poured on the charm along with the patience, and spent a good month or so just chipping away at her insecurities, gaining her trust, flirting like Hell, and being all smooth and suave..

As you can see, I eventually wore her down. Playing around with the issue of asking her to go out with me (in other words, be my girl..), she told me I should just ask it, and be over with. So I did, to which she immediately replied: "Good things come to he who waits.." Lemme tell you, the waiting and the suspense was killing me! It was a few weeks to a month before she finally asked me to go out with her, to which I silently thanked God and immediately agreed.

We've been together now for a little more than two years.. I'm pretty sure she's a keeper. And though it'd be nice to say it's been smooth sailing all that time, it hasn't been. Early on, she told her parents about us, and that was nearly the end of it.. It took more patience, time, love, and healing, but they're getting over it. At least, to the point where they hear my name and don't automatically get pissed off.. Hey, an improvement is an improvement. I'll take whatever I can get.
